Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Monty?

+

Monty is a real-time AI browser extension that protects you from scams on marketplaces. It flags subtle and not-so-subtle red flags you might miss, acting like a team of fraud analysts in your browser.

How does Monty work?

+

Monty works by combining marketplace-specific signals (like image metadata, buyer behavior, listing patterns) with risk scoring models.

The goal isn't to block everything—it's to give you context so you can make smarter, safer decisions without needing to be a scam expert.

What are Monty's buyer and seller agents? How do they work?

+

Monty has two specialized agents (assistants) that work together to protect you:

The Buyer Agent helps you avoid scams when shopping. It analyzes listings in real-time, checking for suspicious patterns that you'd normally miss.

The Seller Protection Agent helps you avoid fraudulent buyers. It analyzes incoming orders, buyer profiles, and other contextual factors to flag potential scams, protecting you from scams before they happen (e.g.return fraud, and other other hard to detect, but subtle seller-targeted scams).

Both agents operate passively in your browser — they don't take any actions, they just provide explainable insights so you can make safer decisions.

How is Monty different from other security tools?

+

Current security tools don't understand or adapt to real-time marketplace context. They often act on obvious, isolated signals—like sketchy URLs, or isolated signals. But scams are often non-obvious and counterintuitive. Monty reasons contextually, spotting what others miss.

Monty also learns with every scan. The more you use it, the better it gets at understanding your risk preferences and spotting context-specific red flags — without making assumptions or acting on your behalf.

When will Monty be released?

+

The first public version of Monty is expected between mid to late Spring 2025.

We're already offering early access to selected users before then — by request only.

Early versions are being used selectively to optimze accuracy and performance.

Is my data safe?

+

Yes. Monty does not store or share any personal data. All scam detection runs locally or with privacy-first cryptographically secure infrastructure.

What are credits and scans?

+

Credits are your currency for using Monty. Each credit allows you to perform one scan.

A scan happens when Monty analyzes something for you - each time Monty checks a listing, examines a profile, or runs a risk assessment, that counts as one scan and uses one credit.

Note: Using 'Speak to Monty' chatbot feature is completely free and doesn't use any credits. This allows you to follow up after any risk assessment to ask questions about why something was flagged as risky, get additional context about suspicious patterns, or request deeper insights into specific warning signs without using additional credits.

Does Monty penalize new or infrequent buyers/sellers?

+

No— we don't raise red flags just because a buyer or seller is new or infrequent. Monty doesn't use simple rule-based logic. It uses contextual reasoning based on relational marketplace factors — meaning it evaluates factors in relation to one another, not in isolation.

Which platforms does Monty support?

+

The first public release will support eBay (UK & US).

Vinted and Facebook Marketplace will be supported in private early access, with a public release planned for June 2025.

More platforms may be added soon based on user demand.

What countries does Monty currently operate in??

+

Monty currently only supports marketplaces in the United Kingdom and the United States

Do I need to sign up to use Monty?

+

No sign-up is required. Simply install Monty and start getting real-time scam protection instantly. *Please note— for full functionality, make sure you're logged into your marketplace account.

How accurate is it?

+

While no system is 100% perfect, Monty is specifically designed to identify marketplace scams with exceptional precision and accuracy, even as scam tactics evolve. It uses advanced AI learning techniques and continuous human expert feedback to constantly improve its detection capabilities.

Does Monty work on mobile?

+

Currently, Monty only works on desktop browsers only.

Can I control when Monty uses scans?

+

Yes, you're in full control.

You can choose whether:

  • Monty scans automatically in the background (e.g., auto-analyzing buyers or listings), or
  • You enable Monty manually for each scan

How to report false positives?

+

Monty is designed to be cautious, which means it may occasionally flag a listing that turns out to be completely safe. This is called a false positive, and while it's not ideal, it's an expected tradeoff in building a model that errs on the side of user safety.

Reporting False Positives

If you come across a false positive, the easiest way to report it is by clicking the thumbs-down icon after the scan results appear. You'll be prompted to leave optional feedback. This kind of input is extremely useful for improving Monty's models over time.

Monty isn't showing up on listings—what do I do?

+

If Monty isn't appearing or working correctly, first ensure you're on a supported marketplace (eBay, Vinted, or Facebook Marketplace) and refresh the page, as Monty analyzes pages after they finish loading and may miss listings with dynamic content.

Next, confirm that Monty is enabled in your browser extensions settings by opening the extensions menu and verifying Monty is active, and disable any ad blockers or privacy extensions that might block Monty from accessing page elements.

If the issue persists, try reinstalling the extension, clearing your browser cache, or contacting support with a screenshot and the listing URL.
